Post-Holiday Slump.

-Piles of laundry surround me.

-Came home to an empty fridge.

-Missing my family to pieces after a lovely and busy week with them.

-Baby has grown accustomed to being the center of attention 24/7...and now, it's just boring ol' Mommy.

-Feeling just a bit more squishy in the midsection after consuming large amounts of holiday fare.

-Tired from little sleep, but knowing it was all worth it to stay up late and chat with my fam.

-Did I mention I am missing my family? A lot?

Here's hoping Christmas comes soon...
I need a holiday pick-me-up!

Anyone else feel the post-holiday slump? Just me...? ;)

A Day in the Life: Sparkling, Tree-Shaped Temptation.

I know, I know. We are breaking all the rules and setting up for Christmas before Thanksgiving is over....but I couldn't help it! I've been so excited for E to see her first Christmas tree, and, after spending last holiday season dreaming and planning and imagining what this year would hold for our family, I just couldn't hold back any longer from getting things rolling.

A little tradition carried over from my family: topping the tree. Each year, my sister and I would have to trade off having the honor of topping the tree. I'm not sure why we thought this was so cool, but it was, nonetheless. Birdie helped us out this year. ;)

Watching her notice the sparkly tree for the first time was priceless...

...and that still, calm sense of awe didn't last long as she plowed ahead to grab whatever was in reach!

Thus, no ornaments around the bottom foot of the tree. Nice look, eh?

Yummy baby in footies, the glowing (pre-Thanksgiving) Christmas tree, hubby making dinner...that was my kind of night.

This week, if you are thankful for someone, tell them. It's that time of year, after all.
Have a lovely holiday, friends.
And, as a matter of fact, I'm thankful for
YOU!

Number 12: The Power of the Puree.

A few weeks ago, I ventured off to Whole Foods with a list of veggies and fruits to purchase so that I could give baby food making a whirl. After asking a few friends and checking out a few resources for 'recipes' and how-to's on baby food, I decided to purchase the following: sweet potatoes, squash, green beans, pumpkin, carrots, peas, apples, bananas, pears, and plums.

The next Sunday afternoon, the hubby was on Daddy Duty as I plowed ahead in the kitchen. For about two hours, I steamed, roasted, mashed, and pureed the veggies and fruits, and then each puree was poured into ice cube trays to freeze. Once frozen, the cubes of food were dumped into ziplock freezer bags, labeled, and tossed into the freezer.

Voila! We ended up with a TON of food, and, being the nerd that I am, I saved the reciept in order to calculate our savings. I wanted to see if it was worth my time. After spending $50 on veggies and fruits, we will save around $100-$125, and it looks like I was able to make enough in those two hours for about 3-4 months of food. For two hours' work, that is worth it to me!

Now, I'm not saying I'll for sure ever do this again. Nor am I the total Earth Mother type who thinks this is the ONLY way to feed your baby. Heck, my kid wears Luv's diapers and her non-organic clothes usually come from Target. However, I did want to give this a try, and it really wasn't as hard or labor-intensive as I'd thought. At least for the next few months, I know that her food is totally organic, and I do feel a little bit proud each time I pull a few cubes of food out of the freezer. So far, she seems to like these purees...well, except for green beans and peas. But really. Who LIKES those things by choice? ;)

Victorian Zombies.

(Stumbled across this post that I forgot to publish from about a year ago...makes me miss teaching.)

My students and I just finished reading Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. I was very pleased with the positive response to the book, and I was so thrilled to find fellow fans of (in my opinion) one of the greater novels ever written.

So, when my brother-in-law sent me a link to this new version, I had to have a little fun with the kiddos:

Recently, I showed this new version of the classic book to the students in all seriousness as if it were our next novel coming up in class. The response was mixed: some die-hard fans of the original were disgusted with this "repulsive" version, some just generally chuckled at their desks, and one kid (who is the type to wear all black, never shave or get regular haircuts, and play strange "magic" cards with friends after school...) was in pure raptures over the possibility of reading anything regarding the undead.

Gotta love teaching high school.

Oh, and I loaned the zombie rendition to a student, and he told me it was hilarious. The story was filled with zombies (obviously), secret ninja warriors, and sneak attacks...and yet it was all set in the prim and proper-ness of Victorian England. Ironic, no?

My student did say that had we not studied the original version, this new, creepy version wouldn't have made any sense, nor would he have had the background knowledge needed to catch the subtle humor of the rendition.

An out-of-the-way compliment to his teacher, and I was highly grateful. You learn to take what you can get when teaching teens.

:)

So, if you're in the market for some zombies sipping tea and perfecting their round-house kicks, this new book is for you!

Number 1: Up With Trees!

(And the winner is..............!?! Check out the Caked blog to find out!)

When we moved to our house, we loved the fact that we were on a little bit of land with ample space between our home and that of our neighbors'. One thing we promised ourselves we'd do each year to increase our home's value was to plant new trees on the property since there were only two trees originally. Every fall, we head out to the local nursery and pick out a few small trees to plant. This year was no exception....

...but we did have a cute little assistant with us this time around! We purchased and planted two maple trees and a few small shrubs around the yard. However, SAD DAY, one of the first trees we planted three years ago died randomly this summer. Bummer. So, one of our new trees took it's place. Oh well, we tried and shall continue to do so.

Product Review: Boon Spoon.

(First off, it's time for another giveaway on the Caked blog...!)

How I only wish I'd found this thing sooner.

So, I was perusing the rows of Target for our weekly groceries (NOT shopping for baby girl clothes like I KNOW you were thinking....! I've staid strong and kept my word. Just ask my husband.) ;) Anyway, while I was snagging a can of Happy Bellies oatmeal cereal, I stumbled upon this:

It is from a company called Boon, and this particular spoon is called a "Squirt." It. Is. Wonderful. You simply unscrew the handle, load it with whatever food your baby is eating for that meal, twist the handle back onto the spoon, pop on the spill-proof cap, and you're good to go! The handle is soft plastic, so when baby is ready for a bite, you just give the handle a gentle squeeze, and food slowly squirts into the spoon tip. The food only comes down when you squeeze the handle, thus eliminating mess and drips. The handle holds about 2.5-3oz. of food, and clean up is a breeze.

This thing has proven to be quite handy for on-the-go feedings. We've used it when we're stuck driving in the car during one of her meals, and we've taken the Boon spoon with us while we're out and about running errands or when we're at friends' homes. It saves me from having to fumble around with tiny spoons that are forever getting lost, dirty lids, plastic containers, etc. For now, I'm making her baby food, and one of the few draw-backs is not having handy dandy little pre-portioned portioned servings of baby food in ready-to-go jars. This spoon is very helpful to eliminate that problem. When E is done, I just pop the cap back on the spoon tip, and I can store it in the diaper bag for later or until I get home to wash it. I've yet to have a spill or a leak, so I'm all about this contraption.

And she seems pretty pleased, too!

I sure wish I'd discovered these sooner as E is moving on to chunkier foods. However, I'm keeping both of my Boon spoons for later on down the road, and, if you've got a wee one who is eating rice cereal or Stage 1 foods, this is the perfect on-the-go tool!

Oh, and I also love their Snack Ball:

The orange lid swivels open, and we keep little cereal puffs inside. The ball design is perfect, because we're able to kill two birds with one stone: snacks and a toy to bring along!

Ah, Boon. What would we do without you and your craftiness?

8 Months: A Letter.

(Disclaimer: I realize these letter posts are quite long, consisting of very specific info and pictures you've probably seen in other posts. To clarify, I am making a book of E's first year, and each month's letter is a chapter, complete with our favorite pictures of that month. I am so bad about filling in her baby book, but I do seem to keep up with her stats and developments on the blog...so, that's what I'm doing with these! Plus, we have lots of out-of-town family that like to see what's going on with our Birdie. I realize that I think my kid is the best kid of all, so if you'd like to skip on over these letters, feel free. You won't hurt my feelings. ;) But if not, enjoy!)

Dear Birdie,

You are 8 whole months old! You've had such a big month, so here are some of the highlights...oh yes, please slow down. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: STOP IT! ;)

Growth:
-You weigh 21 pounds, and you are 29.5 inches long. You are in the 85th percentile for weight and the 99th percentile for height.
-Most of your clothes are now in the 12-18 month range--you are a long baby!
-Your strawberry is starting to involute in the middle, and it still seems not to be bothering you.

Eating:
-You nurse about every 3.5-4 hours, and you eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Because you are SO ready for bed by about 6pm, you will sometimes be so tired that you'll just go without nursing one last time. You are just too tired and very ready to be put in your crib, but if I try to nurse you any sooner, you aren't hungry. So we've still been doing a dream feeding, but I think we'll phase out of that in a week or so. I'll be sad to see that go. I love our one last snuggle before bed.

-So far, your favorite foods are bananas, carrots, apples, sweet potatoes, and pears. You have tried a few cereal puffs, and you will take a few drinks out of your sippy cup. On walks, you'll slurp water from the bottle cap if I offer it to you. So sweet...and messy. ;)

-Speaking of mess, when you are eating, you do NOT like having a messy face. If there is residue on your mouth from your previous bite, you will smear it all over your face with your hands until it is spread so thin you can't feel it anymore. And yet, you don't love having your face cleaned off, either. Complicated lady. ;)

-A new trick: you hold your foot and stick your leg out straight while you nurse like a toe-touch. You seem pretty proud of this new feat.

-The Wandering Arm--during your dream feeding while you are fast asleep, your free arm wanders slowly all through the air until your little hand finds my face or hair. You'll slooooowly move your palm across my cheek and shoulders, or you'll run your fingers through my hair as you nurse. You move so slowly, and your palm is so small and soft. Your sweet little wandering arm is priceless.

-You make a gag face when you realize I've snuck something green into your bite of sweet potatoes or carrots. Not so cute. ;)

Sleeping:
-Like I said, you love to go to bed early. You will go to sleep around 6:30pm and sleep solidly until around 6:30-7am.

(Just wanted to see if I remembered how to swaddle...you were not amused.) ;)

-I can tell your naps are in a bit of a transition this month. For the longest time, you were taking four naps a day, but I think you have totally phased out one of the naps, plus the times have shifted. You now nap at 9am, 1pm, and most of the time, you'll take a cat nap at around 4pm. You still don't nap very long--about 40 minutes to an hour per nap, but you no longer wake up mad anymore. I guess you're getting what you need!

-You've become pretty attached to your bedtime bunny. It is a yarn bunny, and you rub it between your thumb and forefinger over and over, or you'll rub it on your face as you go to sleep. Bunny stays in the crib along with your paci (unless we're out in public...gotta keep a paci handy in case of boredom/possible melt-down...), so you are always pretty excited to get put down for a nap to see your 'friends'...! ;)

Play:
-Big development this month: you can CRAWL! One day, Daddy and I were getting you all ready to go on a walk, and out of nowhere, you just decided you'd like to crawl on over to me! I am so proud of you and so sad at the same time. You are growing up all too quickly, my love.

-You also learned how to clap your hands this month! You will crawl around, stop suddenly and sit up, find me, make eye contact, and then start to clap wildly while smiling and laughing! So cute.

-Also, you can kind of wave 'bye-bye'...you'll do it without being prompted, but when we ask you to wave, you look at us like we're idiots. Pretty funny, actually.
-"Dada" is still your only real word that you say, but we think you're on the verge of saying "Mama"--after we say it over and over to you, you'll think really hard, and then you'll say, "Baba." Pretty close. Usually you just follow me around the house calling me "Dada"...but you're cute, so I'll let it slide. For now. ;)

-Also, before you really get to talking, you like to whisper to get warmed up. You'll whisper "Dadadadada" for minutes on end, and then, when you're good and ready, you'll start actually saying it out loud. Love the whispering.
-Not quite so lovely is when you growl/clear your throat loudly over and over and over. We have no idea where you learned to do this or why, but you sound like a tiny choking dinosaur with all the growling and hacking and gagging.

-Separation anxiety--For about two weeks, you went through a phase of major separation anxiety. I could barely set you down without you collapsing into a pathetic pile of wails, tears, and pouty lips! Didn't even matter if Dad was holding you--you'd still lose it once I started to walk away. Your grandparents all said you did the same thing with them this month, too. After a couple of times of just having to get yourself pulled together (I mean, really. I was sitting RIGHT beside you...!), you finally stopped the pouting. It was kind of flattering, but still. I'm glad that phase passed. Until next time!

-Despite a short spell of separation anxiety this month, you really like to play on your own for awhile. I will set you down amongst all of your toys on the living room floor, and you will contentedly play for the longest time. Of course, you always welcome a playmate, but you really can entertain yourself for awhile.

(Tiny friends, Baby N and Baby E.)

-You've started showing interest in small things like dried blades of grass on the floor or your little cereal puffs; you can grab them with your finger and thumb.
-One of my favorites: you are starting to love to be tickled--you'll pinch your face all up and wrinkle your nose and smile...but your laugh is trapped inside at first. It comes out as a grunt or a big sigh...and then you'll get to squealing! You like to be tickled under your tiny chin, too.

-I'll raise you up above my head and kind of 'toss' you up a couple of inches while saying "Squeesh!" (don't know where that noise/word came from...), and you will giggle and laugh and smile.

-You'll giggle so hard if I look away from you really fast and then slowly turn my eyes back to look into yours. For some reason, this gets you laughing so hard!

-You've found your louder volume when you are talking. You start going on the "dadadada" and it can get pretty loud. You are quite impressed with yourself.

-Face Touch--another of my favorites. When I am holding you, I'll lean in really slowly, touch our noses or foreheads together, and I'll say "Face touch!" You think this is SO fun! You'll hold really still when you know it is coming, and then you will bust out giggling as our faces touch. Now that we've done this so many times, you will crawl over to me when we're playing on the floor and 'face touch' ME with smiles and giggles! OH, melt my heart.

-One of my non-favorties: you've discovered that you can lick your own chin. You'll stick your tongue waaaaaaay out, and then you'll run it all over your chin, possibly checking for specs of leftover food. GROSS. But still cute somehow. ;)

Adventures:
-Pumpkin patch with Grammy and Papa!

-Trip to OKC to see Grandmama and Aunt Caitlin!

-Family pictures! We went back to the same place where we took maternity pictures while you were still in my belly--for some reason, it was very moving to me to be back in that same place with you as you sat and played with leaves, laughed, and smiled for us. We are "us" now. A family.

-Halloween! For your first Halloween, you just had to go as a birdie, so you were a pretty peacock! Aunts Caitlin, Rachel and Emily, Uncle Sean, Grammy and Papa got to come over to see you in your silly costume, and they all agreed that you were the best peacock of them all. ;)

You weren't super pumped up about the costume for very long, but after a pep talk from Dad, you were good to go. ;)

Birdie, as I say each month and with each new milestone reached, it is all happening too fast. You are our JOY embodied, and we love you for making us a family of three.

I'll love you forever and like you for always,
Mommy

A Day in the Life: Feeding the Ducks.

A few weeks ago, my husband told me to pack up the camera and a blanket, and he took me and Birdie to the park in order to play photographer for an afternoon. He decided that I was behind the camera all too often, snapping pictures of mostly E and her Daddy, so he wanted to get a bunch of pictures of just me and her together. I didn't even ask for this, but it turned out to be something I loved! We brought some old bread for the ducks and a blanket to lay by the pond.

A lovely afternoon in the park.

(It was a little sunny out there if you can tell by this priceless, squinty face...!)

(She had almost had enough with the paparazzi by then...!)

(She saw a duck walk by and got a little excited...)

(Me and my best girl.)

Love her. And the photographer.

:)
